Wig Wonderland: An Introduction

Having chosen hair and postiche as my unit option this year, I am really looking forward to this project.  I originally chose hair and postiche because I have always been fascinated by wigs and the endless possibilities that they allow you to create with hair.  I am really intrigued to learn more about the use of wigs within different cultures and societies as well as just how it is used within theatre, film and TV.

Throughout the course of this project, I will learn about knotting and how wigs are made, how to set a wig and how the application of wigs.  I will also research into different cultures and eras that use wigs, and from this I will choose a specific culture that I would like to look into further.  From this research, I will then create three different hairstyles, an extreme, a moderate and a simple hairstyle, based on my chosen culture and shoot them over the coming weeks.

I am really excited for this project, and I am looking forward to learning various things about wigs and how they are used in different civilisations.  I am also intrigued to learn about the meaning of hair within several cultures and how they create individual hairstyles in order to portray these meanings.  Within the project I am nervous about creating hair designs on a synthetic wig, as I have only ever worked on with real hair before.  I am intrigued to learn about knotting and how to make a wig, however I am nervous that I will not get the hang of it in time to complete my hairline.
By the end of the project, I hope to have mastered the knotting technique and managed to knot the hairline of a wig, as well as gaining more knowledge about wigs and having more confidence when styling a wig and working with synthetic hair.

As initial research, I have begun to create a pinterest moodboard of images in which wigs are used.  Here is the link: http://www.pinterest.com/elliesimons94/wig-wonderland/
